O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when he was still in highschool. She made it to the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed by her performance and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performance since then, never fell below the top three. Her performance on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
